Dieser Band enthält den Text ›Welt- und Lebensanschauungen im neunzehnten Jahrhundert‹ aus den Jahren 1900/01, den Rudolf Steiner 1914 aus Sicht seiner mittlerweile entwickelten »Geisteswissenschaft« zu der Schrift ›Die Rätsel der Philosophie‹ in zwei Bänden umarbeitete und erweiterte. Sie versteht sich nicht nur als eine traditionelle Philosophiegeschichte von den Vorsokratikern bis zur Gegenwart, sondern zugleich als eine bewusstseinsphilosophisch fundierte und spirituell ausgerichtete Evolutionstheorie der menschlichen Erkenntnisfähigkeit.

Volume 4 features the two volumes of ›Conceptions of Life and World in the 19th Century‹ of 1900/01, a work that Steiner revised and extended significantly after his turn to esotericism and then re-published in 1914 as ›Riddles of Philosophy‹. The work presents itself as not only a traditional history of philosophy from presocratic thought to Steiner’s contemporaries, but rather as a spiritually and philosophically informed theory of the evolution of human cognition. It divides the development of philosophical thought into four major periods and outlines the potential for future evolution in human cognition by means of methodical meditative practice.
