Innerhalb der intellektuellen Entwicklung Steiners nehmen ›Die Mystik‹ (1901/1924) und ›Das Christentum‹ (1902/1910/1925) eine zentrale Stellung ein. Sie dokumentieren den Übergang des Philosophen Steiner zum Mystiker und Esoteriker und stehen somit im Brennpunkt aktueller Forschungskontroversen, etwa um die Kontinuität von Steiners intellektueller Entwicklung, um die ›Christlichkeit‹ der Anthroposophie oder um die Abhängigkeit Steiners von der anglo-indischen Theosophie.

Rudolf Steiner’s monographs on ›Mysticism at the Dawn of Modernity‹ (1901/1924) and ›Christianity as a Mystical Fact‹ (1902/1910/1925) mark a crucial phase in the genesis of anthroposophy; they document his transformation from philosopher and philologist into the mystic and esotericist of later years. Consequently, these texts are at the heart of ongoing academic controversy about the consistency of Steiner’s intellectual development and his relationship to Anglo-Indian Theosophy and traditional Christianity.
